Southampton’s Romeo Lavia had dominated the landscape after the Reds saw three bids rejected for the 19-year-old Belgian. The latest rejection came prior to their final pre-season friendly against SV Darmstadt after an offer worth up to £46m was rebuffed by the Championship club.
Late on Wednesday, it had emerged that Chelsea had exceeded the bid previously tabled by Liverpool for Lavia.
