Liverpool begin their Premier League campaign away at Chelsea on Sunday afternoon
Liverpool are gearing up for their opening game of the new Premier League season against Chelsea.
JurgenKlopp’s side will be hoping to pick up a first three points of the campaign when making the trip to Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon, though will be facing a team desperate to right the wrongs of a hugely disappointing 2022/23.
It was confirmed on Tuesday Anthony Taylor will be the referee to take charge of this fixture, prompting a strong reaction from supporters of the London club. Taylor has taken charge of three of the last four Premier League meetings involving the two clubs, overseeing both league games in 2021/22 and one head-to-head last term.
Chelsea fans were left frustrated in both of the 2021/22 meetings, with Reece James sent off at Anfield and Sadio Mane avoiding a dismissal in the reverse fixture under the supervision of Taylor. The 44-year-old again became a talking point after Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur at the start of last season, with Thomas Tuchel left furious after insisting neither of Spurs’ goals should have stood.
