Ecuador international Moises Caicedo was seemingly closing in on a big money move from Brighton to Chelsea but the transfer saga has now taken a significant twist with Liverpool entering the race
Liverpool are preparing to smash their own transfer record to sign Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo.
The future of the Ecuadorean, a key figure for the Seagulls as they sealed European football last season, has been the subject of much speculation this summer. And it has Chelsea who have been leading the race, having already had several bids rejected with their rivals holding out for a £100 million.
Talks between the two parties had continued though, and a move appeared imminent after the player was left out of Brighton’s pre-season friendly last Friday. But in a dramatic development, Chelsea’s opponents in Sunday’s Premier League opener are now preparing to hijack their rivals.
According to Sky Sports News, Liverpool are willing to break their transfer record fee in order to bring Caicedo to Anfield. That would mean surpassing the £85 million fee paid to Benfica to bring forward Darwin Nunez to the club last summer.
Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich have also registered their interest, although their immediate priority appears to be sealing a deal for Harry Kane. Furthermore, Caicedo is not said to be seeking a move away from the Premier League.
The Reds can at least offer the 21-year-old European football, something Chelsea missed out on last season amid their mediocre 12th placed finish. But the notion of them topping Chelsea’s bid has also been viewed as a game of cat and mouse between the two clubs following the developments surrounding Romeo Lavia.
