Having made contact with Brighton & Hove Albion regarding Moises Caicedo on Thursday, the Reds saw a British record £110m bid accepted by the Seagulls overnight. Understandably, supporters were in euphoria at the prospect of Liverpool signing the ‘perfect’ player to fill the number six void in their starting XI and be the heartbeat to their long-awaited midfield revamp.
The 21-year-old had long been identified as the midfielder onlookers felt the Reds should move for after unexpectedly losing Fabinho and Jordan Henderson to Saudi Arabia. Club legend Jamie Carragher was the latest famous face to suggest as much earlier this week, when hitting out at the club following their third rejected bid for Southampton’s Romeo Lavia.
Sure enough, supporters could have been forgiven for thinking they were dreaming when word of genuine interest in Caicedo was followed up by an accepted £110m bid. But no sooner had Kopites dared to believe about such fantasies becoming reality, they were brought crashing back down to earth.
Widespread reports on Friday lunchtime put Chelsea back in the driving seat, though to varying degrees. Some insisted the Ecuador international was adamant he would only move to Stamford Bridge, as others suggested he was giving the Londoners, who apparently remain his preferred destination, one final chance to make a bid that Brighton would be willing to accept.
