Joel Matip and Curtis Jones were not pictured in Liverpool training on Wednesday afternoon
Curtis Jones and Joel Matip were among those missing from full Liverpool training at the AXA Centre on Wednesday afternoon.
Jones was a second-half substitute during Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea at the weekend and replaced Cody Gakpo with just under 25 minutes remaining in West London. Matip, meanwhile, was surplus to requirements as Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk were given the nod by manager Jurgen Klopp for the Premier League opener.
On Wednesday, neither player appeared to take part in first-team training at the AXA Training Centre as the rest of their team-mates were put through their paces ahead of this weekend’s clash against Bournemouth. The duo were the only senior members of Sunday’s squad not pictured in the session.
However, it must be stressed that it is not uncommon for players to miss sessions between games as they work on individual programmes or, as has been the case of both Jones in recent months, to manage their workloads.
Yet there was some good news at Kirkby as Thiago Alcantara continued his return to full fitness and was involved in the full session ahead of a potential first appearance in four months when Bournemouth visit Anfield on Saturday afternoon. The Spaniard missed the final two months of the season and the Reds’ summer tour due to undergoing surgery on a long-standing hip issue.
Speaking prior to the game against Chelsea last weekend, Klopp rubbished suggestions the Spaniard could be sold this summer and insisted the 32-year-old will be very “helpful” for his side in the campaign ahead.
“He’s now training. He came in and asked about his role and we spoke,” said Klopp. “[He’s a] super-experienced player. He stepped up in that department. He has only been in team training for a week but very vocal. He is going to be very helpful for us.”
Eighteen-year-old Stefan Bajcetic was another member of the Reds’ squad not pictured in Wednesday’s session despite making his return to full training alongside Thiago last week. However, given the nature of his injury, it is no surprise to see his return being handled with ultimate caution.
Tyler Morton and Conor Bradley, who missed Liverpool’s recent tour of Singapore, are yet to make their returns to full training.
