Liverpool appeal Alexis Mac Allister red card ahead of Newcastle clash

Liverpool have decided to appeal the red card given to Alexis Mac Allister during the Premier League game against Bournemouth.

Liverpool have chosen to formally appeal Alexis Mac Allister’s controversial dismissal during the Premier League clash with Bournemouth.
Mac Allister was given a straight red card shortly before the hour by referee Thomas Bramall after a challenge with Ryan Christie during the Reds’ 3-1 win at Anfield on Saturday.
Neither VAR Paul Tierney nor assistant Constantine Hatzidakis saw any reason to instruct Bramall to review the decision on the pitchside monitor, leaving Mac Allister – who was making his home debut having arrived from Brighton for £35million in the summer – facing a three-match suspension.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp questioned the decision in the immediate aftermath and raised the possibility of the sending-off being challenged.
And the Reds have now decided to lodge an appeal under the category of ‘wrongful dismissal’ with the Football Association, having done so within the deadline of two days after the incident.
The FA will now review the evidence via an independent regulatory commission, and have the power overturn the decision and cancel Mac Allister’s suspension.
They will report back later this week with Mac Allister at present set to miss Sunday’s trip to Newcastle United, along with games against Aston Villa at home and Wolverhampton Wanderers away.
Liverpool have taken into account the FA’s stance on ‘frivolous’ appeals, which can result in a three-game ban being upgraded to four if the appeal is rejected. An appeal can, however, be dismissed without the punishment of an extra game if it is considered there was justification for the initial decision to be queried.
Speaking on Saturday, Klopp said: “I saw it back, I think the amount of times I’ve been asked about it shows we’re discussing it. In the game, I asked Macca and he said ‘I touched him but not really’, that was all he told me.
“After the game, I saw it and if you have a list of points of what we need to give a red card, for what we need for contact, no other box is ticked in that moment. “I think the punishment 40 minutes with 10 men it’s already punishment enough.”
