Latest Liverpool injury news ahead as Jurgen Klopp’s side prepare to take on Newcastle United in the Premier League.
Liverpool go in search of their next Premier League points away to Newcastle this weekend, with Jurgen Klopp’s men expecting another tough test on the road.
The season opened with a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge before a first victory of the season was claimed on Saturday against Bournemouth. Luis Diaz, Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota were amongst the goals in a 3-1 triumph, however come 90 minutes both the Colombian and Trent Alexander-Arnold had limped off, whilst Alexis Mac Allister was shown a red card.
Next in line are fellow top-four hopefuls Newcastle. Although Klopp remains unbeaten up on Tyneside since his first trip there in 2015, a 5-1 opening day win at home against Aston Villa means the hosts should be in typical good spirits.
The Liverpool boss even teed up the fixture as early as last week, starting the mind games with a small mention of how the Magpies will be impacted by the Premier League’s new touchline rules, which subsequently prompted a response from Eddie Howe.
Even just a couple of weeks into the new season the Reds have a number of injuries to contend, unsurprisingly impacting the midfield selection more than any other area so far. With hope there will returnees for the clash against Newcastle, below is the latest Liverpool injury news:
Luis Diaz
Klopp may have a plethora of fine attacking options to pick from though to lose his standout player of the new season so far for such a vital clash would provide a major worry.
Diaz left the field in the 86th minute having equalised spectacularly before the half-hour mark, being replaced by Darwin Nunez. He was given treatment shortly before exiting, the concern being any potential problems could be to do with the knee injury that sidelined him for six months last season.
After full-time, Klopp said: ““Top class, very good in shape but the second half was tough for him, being part of this new midfield was really hard for him, we could see that.”
Expected return date: This week
Trent Alexander-Arnold
Similar to Diaz, ‘the scouser in the team’ also left the action early on Saturday. He suffered a knock before being swapped with Joe Gomez then was seen leaving the dugout with an ice pack wrapped around one ankle.
When asked what happened by the press, Klopp replied: “I hope so (that he’ll be okay). He told me he had a kick which was pretty painful but as far as a twist or fall, it was a kick. That’s why we changed then but I hope he will be fine.”
Expected return date: This week
Curtis Jones
The 22-year-old was forced to sit out of the second match of the season following an ankle injury sustained in training. This was first claimed by the Athletic on Saturday.
Their report suggested the injury was only a minor one and Jones would return to training with hopes of being included in the group that travels to the North East on Sunday.
Having made a bright impact towards the end of last season after recovering from injury, the midfielder picked up where he left off with an energetic display in the latter stages against Chelsea eight days ago.
Expected return date: This week
Thiago Alcantara
On Friday Thiago Alcantara’s return to action was downplayed by his manager. Klopp sat in front of the press and explicitly noted that he would ‘not be there yet’ for Bournemouth match, however is ‘really close’ to a return.
His time will have to be managed due to the fact he was unable to take part in pre-season fixtures, though was part of the delegation that travelled to July’s camp in Germany and has since rejoined squad training for the start of the season.
Thiago’s was a hip problem that required surgery before the end of the 2022/23 campaign.
Expected return date: Late August/early September
Stefan Bajcetic
Like his Spanish compatriot, Stefan Bajcetic has been out of action since before last season ended due to an abductor injury. He too had been stated by the Liverpool boss to be ‘not there yet’ for the Bournemouth match so it was a welcoming sight to see the 18-year-old’s name listed amongst the substitutes on Saturday.
He remained in the dugout the 90 minutes though posted this encouraging message on social media afterwards:
Perhaps if circumstances were different and Mac Allister had not been dismissed the Anfield crowd would have been treated to at least a few minutes of the young midfielder, so a substitute return against Newcastle is on the cards.
Expected return date: This week.
Conor Bradley
The young full-back showed potential with pre-season performances in Germany, playing 90 minutes over the course of two fixtures.
He was then left out of the group that travelled to Singapore following a minor, unspecified injury and has not featured in any matchday squads since the start of the season, though has been involved in training since his team-mates returned to England.
Once fit the Northern Irishman is expected to slot into Klopp’s plans as understudy to Trent Alexander-Arnold, having proven himself in League One with Bolton Wanderers last year.
Expected return date: Unknown
