Round-up of the latest transfer rumours from Liverpool’s rivals Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Brighton
Just like Liverpool, a number of Premier League top four hopefuls are in a rush to get their transfer business done ahead of the September 1 deadline.
Following Arsenal’s narrow victory over Crystal Palace on Monday evening, the state of play after round two in the top flight is that three clubs – the Gunners, Manchester City and Brighton – hold a perfect record. Liverpool and Tottenham were each triumphant in their latest run-outs so remain unbeaten, whilst all of Chelsea, Manchester United, Newcastle had their early-season hopes dented by losses.
The Reds can keep in control of their own destiny, continuing with a win away at St. James’ Park on Sunday, though of course can’t control what each of their rivals do in the market.
Some face a fight to strengthen before the window closes whilst others seek to keep hold of their talented stars amid solid interest.
Here are the latest rumours floating around the rest of the Premier League:
Manchester United
Manchester United confirmed on Monday that Mason Greenwood would not be continuing at the club. In a statement published on the club’s website, they wrote: “All those involved, including Mason, recognise the difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United. It has therefore been mutually agreed that it would be most appropriate for him to do so away from Old Trafford, and we will now work with Mason to achieve that outcome.”
The Mail Online have claimed that at least two Championship clubs held preliminary talks but decided against the move, whilst the 21-year-old was previously linked with Serie A side Atalanta.
It has also been speculated that Raphael Varane could leave Old Trafford with a report from Saudi Arabia claiming the Red Devils’ only goalscorer so far this season had been contacted by Al Ittihad.
Manchester City
The 2022/23 treble winners are on course to make their third addition of the summer – Jeremy Doku of Rennes.
The Belgian winger’s is a name Reds supporters will be familiar with, having been linked on numerous occasions over the last couple of years. Jurgen Klopp opted to sign other targets in Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo in that time frame, opening the door for Pep Guardiola to swoop in.
Fabrizio Romano gave the all-important ‘here we go’ announcement on Monday, stating that a £55.5m fee had been verbally agreed, personal terms had been settled and a medical will take place later this week.
Doku has previously been linked with a move to Anfield.
Arsenal
Mikel Arteta has invited transfer speculation around centre half Gabriel Magalhaes after leaving him out of the second Premier League match in a row.
The Brazilian was a surprise absentee from the opening win over Nottingham Forest, leading to claims of interest from Real Madrid and Saudi Arabia, as per the ECHO’s sister site football.london. He was then left out again last night for the trip to Selhurst Park.
However Arsenal’s manager, again via football.london, has clarified that the 25-year-old remains part of his plans.
Chelsea
Already amassing a shopping receipt worth £345m this summer, Chelsea are still in the market for a striker before the window closes.
football.london ‘have been told not to rule out a centre forward signing’ as Mauricio Pochettino already seeks to find a greater balance in his team, who are winless after two league matches.
Arsenal’s Folarin Balogun has been heavily linked in recent days with Ben Jacobs claiming internal conversations have taken place at Stamford Bridge whether they should raid their rivals once again.
Brighton
The latest word from South America is that Brighton are on the hunt for their next wonderkid coup, and may have found him at the Reds’ namesake, Liverpool Montevideo of Uruguay.
In an article by El Pais boldly titled ‘Fabricio Diaz directs his departure from Liverpool to a club that seeks to repeat the 100 million plan’, they report that the Seagulls have identified the 20-year-old in question as the heir to Moises Caicedo and a player with huge potential to profit from in future.
Diaz already has over 100 appearances at club level in the Uruguayan Primera Division and was a key component of his country’s under-20 World Cup success in June.
