Steven Gerrard rubbishes reports Al Ettifaq want Mason Greenwood transfer
Reports had claimed that Al Ettifaq, who are managed by Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, were lining up a move for Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood
Steven Gerrard has rubbished reports linking his Al Ettifaq side with a move for Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood as “fake news.”
United announced on Monday that Greenwood is to leave the club. It came after the they concluded a six-and-a-half month investigation into the 21-year-old, saying “it would be most appropriate for him” to restart his career at another club.
The Crown Prosecution Service dropped charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm against Greenwood on February 2, 2023. Greenwood maintained his innocence and said in a statement released via United that he “did not do the things I was accused of.”
The Manchester Evening News report United will work with Greenwood’s representative and father, Andrew, to identify the appropriate club for him to continue his career. The England international is contracted to United until 2025 and the club has the option of an additional year.
Since that decision was made public, clubs have been linked with a move for Greenwood, whose last professional appearance came on January 22, 2022. However, after a report in the Daily Mail linked Saudi Pro League side Al Ettifaq with the forward, Gerrard took to social media to refute such claims.
“Fake News,” Gerrard wrote in an Instagram story to his 11.4 million followers, with the former Liverpool captain accompanying his caption with the screenshot of the Daily Mail’s story that claimed the Saudi outfit was “considering” making a £10m-per-year offer to Greenwood.
