Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo both chose to go for Chelsea this summer instead of Liverpool.
Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo’s rejection of Liverpool has been questioned by former Chelsea and Arsenal footballer Emmanuel Petit.
Both stars were sought for by the Reds as Jurgen Klopp sought to expand his options in the center. Following the exits of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho, Liverpool moved to add a player and made three bids for Lavia.
They quickly focused on Brighton & Hove Albion player Caicedo, and Liverpool eventually had a deal accepted by the Seagulls. Chelsea provided the money needed by Roberto De Zerbi’s side after a three-day saga, and the Londoners lured the Ecuadorian to Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea’s acquisition of Lavia from St Mary’s significantly damaged Liverpool’s transfer prospects. Since then, the six-time Champions League champions have acquired Wataru Endo, a midfielder for VfB Stuttgart, paying £16.25 million to bring him over from the Bundesliga.
Since taking over for Roman Abramovich at Chelsea, American owner Todd Boehly has allowed unrestricted spending to reach more than £1 billion.
Additionally, World Cup-winning players are no longer available due to agreements and decisions. Petit perplexed. The numbers in football right now are ridiculous, he declared. Although it is frequently unjustified, there are situations when it is. It demonstrates how much you value that player and are prepared to pay to acquire them.
Just a matter of time, really. You have to compete with the passing of time and the stress of missing injured players. Although the price didn’t surprise me, the fact that they offloaded so many players in the transfer market did. It’s crazy that they currently have about 35 guys.
Merseyside has had a lot of departures this summer. James Milner, Naby Keita, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were among the players whose contracts expired in July and joined Henderson and Fabinho in leaving Anfield.
After Chelsea showed interest in Caicedo for several months, Liverpool’s interest in the midfielder was unexpected.
If I were Caicedo or Lavia, I would choose Liverpool over Chelsea because I don’t see a clear strategy for what is happening there. 35 athletes? Let’s go. How many players are necessary? It will be a nightmare, precisely like what occurred the previous season.
“Despite the fact that Liverpool added new players in [Dominik] Szoboszlai and [Alexis] Mac Allister, there is one area in particular that needs improvement: the midfield region.
If I were Caicedo, I would have joined Liverpool so I could play with less pressure and rejoin with Mac Allister, who has left the team in large numbers.
“The answer is very clear to me,”
