Luke Hewitson, a goalkeeper for Liverpool, produced a game-winning save in the 97th minute, just days after making an unexpected loan move to Stalybridge Celtic.
Hewitson made a short-term move to Stalybridge Celtic after sitting out the first few games of the season for Liverpool’s academy teams.
The 18-year-old will play for the non-league team for the first 50 miles away in Greater Manchester before coming back to Merseyside in January.
Hewitson made his FA Cup debut in a 3-2 loss to Runcorn Linnets in the first round a day after his transfer was finalized
His league debut took place on Tuesday as Celtic traveled to Clitheroe in an effort to maintain their eighth-tier undefeated start to the season.
Jordan Burton’s goal in the 18th minute put the visitors ahead, but they had to hang on as Clitheroe rallied. It was Hewitson who came through with a crucial save in the dying seconds.
Veron Parny of Clitheroe attempted to score at the near post in the seventh minute of stoppage time, but Hewitson made a “exceptional” save, according to the team’s match report.
Manager James Kinsley said, “I’m standing on the side, I’ve got subs running past me when he’s making that, cheering it.”
“That’s what we want—that sense of community. It’s crucial that we uphold that.
Hewitson, who switched from Sunderland to Liverpool two years ago, lacked any senior experience before moving to Stalybridge.
