Eddie Howe will send Newcastle into the match against Liverpool still carrying the pain of their previous meetings.
The Reds were the only team to defeat the Magpies twice in the Premier League, although they did get some retaliation as they went on to finish fourth, one spot and four points ahead of Jurgen Klopp’s team.
Howe acknowledges that it doesn’t take much to bring back memories of Liverpool’s victory at Anfield last August thanks to a Fabio Carvalho goal in the eighth minute of stoppage time, or the red card that cost goalkeeper Nick Pope his place in the Carabao Cup following a 2-0 loss in the rematch.
Howe remarked: “I move on swiftly from the game in that you have to be ready for the next one, but I think the passion, sensation, and memories of the game, they stick with you for some time.
“The games from last year’s season are still in my mind. I can picture specific situations, but you have to step back from that and ask, “Well, how do we prepare this one?” because, whether it’s tactical or something else, it’s about delivering that to the best of your ability.
England’s NEWCASTLE-UPON-TYNE on February 8, 2022: During the FA Premier League game between Newcastle United FC and Eddie Howe, manager of Newcastle United and Everyone FC at St. James park.
Many of the setbacks I experienced during my managerial career are still fresh in my mind; they simply need the right amount of emotional rekindling.
Newcastle has re-established their rivalry with Liverpool, which produced a number of memorable matches in the 1990s, thanks to their comeback, which has been fueled in large part by the money of their Saudi-backed owners.
The Magpies have been the target of several shots from Klopp, and the two coaching staffs have occasionally had a chilly rapport on the sidelines.
Howe expressed amazement at the notion that there is a greater divide between the two sides when they face off, though.
When asked why he thought the competition had intensified in recent seasons, he responded, “I don’t know.
Since the beginning of time, I genuinely believe that Newcastle and Liverpool have had a rivalry. It hasn’t increased significantly, in my opinion, from where it was before.
“Everyone will watch a game when it has a long history and has been played for a lot of years. I want to see what happens.
Because they are two venerable clubs competing against one another, there will be flashpoints and moments. It hasn’t necessarily increased during the past two years, in my opinion.
