The most recent player to temporarily leave Liverpool is Nat Phillips, who has agreed on a four-month loan with Celtic.
Despite not participating in any of Liverpool’s preseason matches, the defender has drawn attention from a number of teams this summer.
He has signed a short-term contract with the Scottish champions and will be eager to establish himself as a regular after appearing just five times for the Reds the previous year.
The loan of Phillips will then be reviewed in January, indicating that he might be returned to Liverpool if center-back injuries continue.
Brendan Rodgers, the former manager of Liverpool, was hired by Celtic earlier this year for a second stint and has solicited the aid of his old team to improve Glasgow’s defense.
Following the injuries to Stephen Welsh, Maik Nawrocki, and Cameron Carter-Vickers, Rodgers recently acknowledged he was “light on” center-backs.
Phillips has only recently returned to training, but he may make his debut against Rangers on Sunday.
This summer, it was thought that Phillips may make a long-term transfer away from Anfield. Leeds was one of the teams rumored to be interested in signing the center-back.
Middlesborough, another Championship team, had also joined the running as they looked into the potential of a loan agreement.
Since joining the Reds from Bolton’s development ranks in 2016, Phillips has had prior loan stints with Stuttgart and Bournemouth.
Given the current lack of defensive cover and the fact that the current center-backs are prone to injuries, this deal may raise questions among Liverpool supporters.
While Virgil van Dijk is currently suspended after receiving a red card against Newcastle, Ibrahima Konate is currently injured.
