Upon learning of his transfer to Anfield, a previous image of Ryan Gravenberch wearing a Liverpool jersey was recreated. Ryan has now given the backstory to the image.
The Dutchman, who became the fourth midfielder to join the team this summer, has agreed to a five-year contract with the club in a deal estimated to be worth £38.5 million.
With just over an hour left before the transfer deadline, he was introduced as a Reds player late on Friday night.
The news was accompanied by a photo of Gravenberch sitting on a treadmill while clutching a phone and sporting a Liverpool shirt, resembling one that has been going around the internet lately.
Fans had assumed the 21-year-old was a lifelong supporter because of the photo, but he explained it in his first interview with the club.
“Oh, really? When asked where the image came from, Gravenberch replied, “I didn’t see it.
Ah, OK. Yes, I saw that photo. I traded shirts with Ki-Jana Hoever, a former player from this place, in the gym a few years ago. That shirt was really lovely.
The garment in question, from Hoever’s final campaign with the team, was Liverpool’s 2019–20 championship shirt.
With five caps for the Netherlands U21s, Hoever, who joined the Reds from Ajax’s junior program, has come into contact with Gravenberch on the international stage.
This summer’s major renovation in the centre of the park was completed by Gravenberch’s arrival on the last day.
