In his debut game under Marcelo Bielsa’s instruction, Darwin Nunez excels with two assists.
Assuming Luis Suarez’s No. 9 jersey, Darwin Nunez excelled in his first game for Marcelo Bielsa as Uruguay defeated Chile 3-1 in a World Cup qualifying match.
Nunez knew he was the primary man for Bielsa going into this international break because Suarez and Edinson Cavani were both missing.
The famed Uruguayan manager wanted one-on-one sessions with the Liverpool striker before their meeting. He was appointed in May after stints with Athletic Club, Marseille, Lille, and Leeds at the club level.
In regards to their Zoom calls, Nunez stated last month that “some things he thinks can be better.” He corrects me, I say.
His new national team manager, 24, made his debut on Friday night.
Nunez only touched the ball 35 times in 73 minutes, according to FotMob, and only eight of his 15 attempted passes were successful, which would indicate a subpar performance.
However, he played a crucial role in every Uruguayan offensive move up to his substitution midway through the second half, which included two assists.
He had a match-high three successful dribbling attempts, six ground duels won, six shots on goal, twice stopped by Chilean goalkeeper Brayan Cortes, and six shots blocked.
Both of his assists were outstanding: the first, a rapid one-two in a confined space that allowed Nicolas de la Cruz to score, and the second, in which he outran his defender to the byline and cut back for De la Cruz’s hat trick.
Alisson was not utilized in Brazil’s 5-1 victory over Bolivia in their World Cup qualifying match, which occurred on a night that was otherwise mostly quiet for Liverpool’s internationals.
While Andy Robertson guided Scotland to a 3-0 victory over Cyprus, Diogo Jota spent the evening on the sidelines as Portugal managed a 1-0 triumph over Slovakia.
Stefan Bajetic played his first minutes in six months during Spain U21s’ 6-0 hammering of Malta, coming off the bench to play center-back.
Lewis Koumas sat out of Wales U19s’ 1-0 loss to Finland at the Jari Litmanen Arena, whereas Jayden Danns played 20 minutes for England U21s in their 4-0 loss to Japan at Tournoi International.
