Jurgen Klopp receives a hero’s welcome upon visiting his old team during the Liverpool break

In order to visit his native Germany during the current international break, Jurgen Klopp paid a visit to his old team, Mainz, on Saturday.

At one point, Klopp was thinking about taking a year off in 2024, but after agreeing to a new contract with Liverpool, he postponed his intentions until at least 2026.
However, it is obvious that his priorities have changed recently because, rather than traveling abroad for warm-weather vacations like he always did, he now uses the time to see his new granddaughter.
This calls for frequent journeys home to Germany, where he also planned a visit this month to Mainz, the team where he started his managing career.
A reputation built over eleven years as a player with Mainz and seven more as manager helped him land moves to Dortmund in 2008 and Liverpool seven years later.
It is hardly surprising that he is regarded as a legendary figure at the club given that his biggest accomplishment at Mainz was being promoted to the Bundesliga in 2003/04.

In preparation for their friendly match against MSV Duisberg on Saturday, Klopp traveled to Mainz. Before the game, he greeted fans from a stage outside the Bruchwegstadion.

The friendly was organized to bid fans farewell to the Sudtribune stand at the Bruchwegstadion, which will be destroyed the following year.
After 82 years of use, Mainz relocated from the Bruchwegstadion to their new Mewa Arena in 2011. Since that time, the stadium has continued to host youth matches for the club.
Klopp spent all of his time at Mainz playing at the Bruchwegstadion, so it was only appropriate that he paid what the club called a “flying visit” on a special occasion.
Fans gathered near the stage before the game, in which Sepp van den Berg, a loanee from Liverpool, started, to yell “Jurgen, Jurgen” at Klopp.
He was sporting a shirt that read “South Bank, steps full of history” or “Sudtribune, stufen voller geschichte” in English.
Klopp played 340 times for Mainz during his stay there before taking charge of 269 games throughout all competitions.
Only two players have made more appearances for the team than Klopp: Dimo Wache (406) and Nikolce Noveski (348).
Additionally, according to Transfermarkt, Klopp has scored more goals than every player in the club’s history save for three.
