Cody Gakpo is accepting Jurgen Klopp’s call for him to utilize his positional flexibility, viewing the shift as an opportunity to develop into a “more complete player.”
Due to Liverpool’s lack of players during the preseason and the first two games of the season, Gakpo was used in midfield.
Despite Klopp’s emphasis that “players can play different positions,” Gakpo has struggled in the No. 8 position, which is not surprising given the necessity to adjust.
Gakpo, however, has and will continue to welcome any midfield minutes even though the Reds may have piled up on midfielders capable of playing in their regular No. 8 role.
Gakpo recently spoke to Voetbal International and said, “In the beginning it always takes some getting used to when you are in a different position, but then it is vital to pick it up quickly and show that I am a versatile player.
“You simply want to play and contribute, wherever that may be.
“The manager views me as an attacker, but I can also initiate attacks from midfield,” the player said. This is why I also keep minutes there.
We play with a lot of energy so that we have room to adjust our positions. This frequently occurs naturally.
“I think it’s best for me as a person to develop myself in different ways. That describes who I am and how I have evolved on the field.
It is crucial for me to develop into a more complete player since that also reflects on how I am as a player.
It is simple to overlook the fact that Gakpo joined Anfield in January, has only played 30 games since then, and has already displayed a ton of fascinating potential.
Gakpo, a new look forward for Liverpool, has stood out among the group at age 24 and there is a lot of anticipation for what he may provide as he develops under
“I feel good,” Gakpo continued. “I can reflect on a strong preseason and strong start to the season, during which I played in several positions.
“Obviously, there is always room for improvement because that is how I am wired, but I felt terrific and am having a good time in Liverpool. There are many things to consider; I’m halfway through the season.
“Everyone at the club helped me a lot, especially Virgil van Dijk, who showed me the ropes, and I am very appreciative of him for that,” the club member said.
