When Liverpool visits Belgium in December, they will play their sixth and last Europa League group stage match at the Anderlecht stadium.
The Reds were placed in Group E with LASK, Toulouse, and Union SG after failing to qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 2016.
On December 14, Jurgen Klopp will go with his team to Belgium to take on Union SG, although the match won’t be played at the hosts’ customary home ground.
The Belgian team normally plays all of their home matches at Stade Joseph Marien, which can hold about 9,000 spectators, however this does not meet UEFA regulations. The Belgian team placed third in the Belgian Pro League last season.
Instead, Liverpool will travel to Lotto Park, the stadium where Anderlecht plays, which can hold 21,000 people and is less than three miles from Stade Joseph Marien.
In recent European campaigns, Union SG has played their home matches at Lotto Park thanks to agreements they’ve had with Anderlecht in the past.
On their official website, the club announced that they will also host LASK and Toulouse in the stadium for the 2023–24 group stage.
In an effort to retain the Champions League championship they had won in Istanbul five months previously, Liverpool made their final trip to Lotto Park in October 2005.
Kevin Mac Allister joined the team last summer after formerly playing for Argentinos Juniors alongside his brother Alexis and father Carlos.
The Union SG team was overjoyed to learn that they had been placed in the same Europa League group as the Reds for what will be their second consecutive campaign.
They advanced to the competition’s quarterfinals the previous year but were defeated 5-2 overall by Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen.
When Liverpool travels to Union SG in December, they will be expecting to have already advanced to the competition’s knockout stages. Should Liverpool win the group, they will be allowed to skip the second play-off round in February.
