Displeased with his red card, Van Dijk
This weekend, Virgil van Dijk will serve the second of his two-game suspension, and the defender has criticized the Premier League’s “inconsistent” style of officiating.
The FA published a statement from the club, in which it was said that Van Dijk had a “genuine belief” that his tackle on Alexander Isak against Newcastle should not have been considered a foul. This letter revealed the grievances of the Liverpool captain.
Referee John Brooks dismissed him, and because of his outburst in response to the decision, his one-game suspension was increased.
Also made public is the Dutchman’s statement on the incident, in which he makes the following claims:
“Immediately following the game, I waited in the tunnel to talk with Mr. Brooks and Mr. Pawson, the 4th Official, and I expressed my regret to them both for my behavior at the time of the red card.
“Mr. Brooks and Mr. Pawson accepted my apology and acknowledged that they understood that the emotional impact of the game had been a significant factor.”
