Ryan Gravenberch talked about the freedom he has in Jurgen Klopp’s team while describing himself as “sloppy” at moments during his complete Liverpool debut against LASK.
Following a brief cameo appearance away at Wolves, the midfielder made his first start in a Liverpool uniform during a 3-1 comeback victory in the Europa League opener.
Luis Diaz’s goal for the Reds shortly after the hour mark was assisted by Gravenberch, who also marked the event.
After being included in the manager’s starting 11 for the first time, his evening was cut short by injury, and he was replaced by Mohamed Salah with 15 minutes remaining. Despite this, he remained in excellent spirits.
“Definitely, yes. The Dutchman told the club’s official website, “We didn’t start so well, but we had the mindset and we turned it around again. I was extremely delighted with the game.
“For myself, it was good, but it was also sloppy sometimes, so I have to work on that, and the rest was OK.”
Supporters have been divided on Gravenberch’s role in the midfield, with Liverpool reportedly looking for a “multi-functional” addition before Gravenberch’s arrival.
The new No. 38 for Liverpool said that Klopp has encouraged him to “feel free” during games when asked how his role in the team compares to that under past coaches.
“They [were compact], but also on our side we had to do it better because normally I’m higher, we have two sixes, and I’m higher up the pitch, so we have to do it better and I think we will,” he added.
“Yesterday after training, [Klopp] came to me and told me [to] feel free, you know, you can do whatever you want, of course, you have to do your things, but he just said feel free and show yourself and the Ryan you are.”
