Andre, a midfielder for Fluminense, was strongly linked to Liverpool in the summer. However, the Brazilian team’s decision to resist the deal has paid off as they advanced to the Copa Libertadores final.
Andre surfaced throughout the summer as a possible option for Jurgen Klopp’s revamped midfield, as the midfielder met the criteria of a youthful, lively, and capable player.
The 22-year-old turned down approaches because he and Fluminense were determined to compete for trophies in both Serie A and the Copa Libertadores.
And after advancing to the latter with a 2-1 victory against Internacional on Wednesday to complete a 4-3 aggregate victory, they are now just one step away from doing so.
Alisson’s former team, Internacional, hosted the second leg, but Fluminense under Andre stole the victory away with two goals in the final minute.
The 22-year-old, who lined up as the defensive midfielder in a double pivot, played both halves of the semi-final’s full 90 minutes.
For the first time in his career, they qualified for the Libertadores final, and Andre wrote on Instagram: “Unforgettable moment! It’s “Toward Eternal Glory!”
After speaking with the Brazilian club throughout the summer, Liverpool will undoubtedly keep an eye on Andre. According to chief executive Billy Hogan, a transfer in January may be feasible.
The Fluminense president admitted back in September, “[I told him]: ‘If you want to buy him now to take him in January, we can start talking, or if you want to wait until December, we’ll talk in December’.”
Although he would be due a break following a long domestic season, it is unclear whether Liverpool will make another move for Andre in January.
In Fluminense’s current season, the youthful midfielder has made 46 appearances; there are still 14 games left, including the Libertadores final on November 4 against either Boca Juniors or Palmeiras.
