The 2-1 loss at Tottenham on Saturday was caused by Diogo Jota being dismissed, according to an independent Premier League panel.
The Portuguese forward entered the game at halftime over the weekend, and with about 20 minutes remaining, he received two yellow cards quickly.
A communication issue between referee Simon Hooper and the VAR officials resulted in Luis Diaz’s goal soon before halftime not being allowed to stand, and Curtis Jones was also disqualified in the first quarter.
According to ESPN, the league’s Independent Key Match Incidents Panel concluded after reviewing the most recent round of games.
Moments later, Liverpool’s No. 20 received a second booking, which received far less attention overall and was generally seen as a stupid challenge given the circumstances.
The panelists think that this choice was likewise erroneous, and that the result of three of the five members voting against a booking was the proper one.
In addressing the second yellow card during his press conference prior to Union SG, Jurgen Klopp expressed a same viewpoint, stating he “will never understand” why the 26-year-old was sent out.
“The two situations; the first I think is clear not a yellow,” stated the manager.
The second I didn’t truly see coming back, but it doesn’t matter. We continue to play with 10 men if the first penalty is not a yellow.
The most recent Jota news is sure to infuriate Red supporters even more because many of them are already fuming over the other officiating gaffes at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Despite Darren England and Dan Cook of the VAR concluded that the Colombian was onside, the PGMOL admitted that a “significant human error” prevented Diaz’s goal from being counted.
