With the toughest winger he ever faced now a free agent, Trent Alexander-Arnold has made an unexpected claim. The winger may have been forgotten.
In an extensive conversation with Jan Molby, the vice captain of Liverpool took part in the club’s ‘We Are Liverpool’ podcast to launch season two.
Alexander-Arnold was asked, “Who was the best player he faced that people wouldn’t know about,” and the right-back chose a rival from his academy days.
“I would say Brandon Barker,” was his response.
“I played for the U18s, he played for City.” I made my U21s debut at Anfield and was defeated 3-0.
“I believe he had two goals and an assist. I left the game at 60 [minutes] and the opponent who I believe just annihilated me was there.
I’ve never experienced it like that before. At that time, I believe this youngster will eventually become the best player in the world.
“I’d never seen somebody move so rapidly, so precisely, and so successfully. So, Brandon Barker it is.
While establishing himself at Man City, Barker was highly regarded as a top potential. Barker later made his FA Cup debut in 2016 as a substitute in a 5-1 loss to Chelsea.
While on loan at Rotherham, NAC Breda, Hibernian, and Preston before joining Rangers permanently, that was his only appearance for their first team.
He was then referred to by Steven Gerrard, along with Liverpool loanee Sheyi Ojo, as a player who may “open the door” for his career.
The 27-year-old agreed to end his contract with the club in August, little over a year after Neil Lennon was fired as Omonia boss.
With 156 senior matches for nine different clubs under his belt and 15 goals and 15 assists, Barker is currently a free agent.
His professional route is one that many athletes of his caliber have taken, especially after being hailed as the newest great young talent.
Barker will probably be sought after back in England or Scotland, but Alexander-Arnold’s experience demonstrates how challenging it can be to make a name for yourself at a prestigious club.
