DeMario Douglas, a rookie selected in the sixth round, led the New England Patriots’ wide receiver group with 49 receptions for 561 yards last season, making him possibly the worst wide receiver in the NFL.
Though they still have two underwhelming veterans in Kendrick Bourne and JuJu Smith-Schuster, they did sign K.J. Osborn in free agency. However, a prominent media figure has already urged the team to go grab the new biggest star who may have just hit the market.
After Brandon Aiyuk was reported to have asked for a trade from the San Francisco 49ers, Bill Simmons of The Ringer posted the following on Twitter today: “If Brandon Aiyuk actually requested a trade and the Pats don’t get him and extend him – with tons of 2024 cap space BTW – how will the Krafts then blame that massive mistake on Belichick?”
That tweet from an embittered Patriots supporter who recently had to endure one of the worst wide receiver seasons in recent memory is laced with a lot of salt.
After witnessing a season in which backup running back Ezekiel Elliott led the team in receptions, fans are particularly irritated. Therefore, Aiyuk would be an instant major upgrade after recording 1,342 yards on 75 receptions, more than twice as many yards as any other Patriots receiver, and seven touchdowns.
Given that he has improved his output in each of his four seasons in the league, Aiyuk is entering a contract year on his fifth-year option and is undoubtedly looking to cash in.
Additionally, New England owns the third choice in the draft, which is probably going to be used to select a rookie quarterback for the team. An excellent welcome gift for him would be Aiyuk.
