Perry, Curran react to Pats meeting with Michael Penix Jr.

When Perry and Curran first appeared on NBC Sports, they were reacting to the Pats meeting with Michael Penix Jr.
Boston While they hunt for their next franchise quarterback, the New England Patriots are doing the necessary investigational work.
The Patriots, who will select third overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, are mainly associated with elite quarterback prospects Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels, and J.J. McCarthy. According to a recent rumor by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, New England is expected to select between Maye and McCarthy since the Washington Commanders are expected to select Daniels at number two. However, what happens if they don’t like either choice?
The Patriots are reportedly meeting with Washington quarterback Michael Penix, who is regarded as one of the second-tier quarterback options in this year’s draft, in order to cover all their bases. On Monday’s Early Edition, our Phil Perry and Tom E. Curran discussed their immediate responses to the news.
“Very intriguing, as he doesn’t belong in the category of elite first-round selections. Perry stated, “That’s not how the league views him. Thus, they’re now expanding their search, and I wonder if they’re doing so in case there’s still some of the same dispute or lack of agreement that Tom and I discussed at the very beginning of the J.J. McCarthy program.
“The best thing for us if we can’t decide on one person at three overall, if we do end up trading back, is that now we’re open to quarterbacks in the second tier, like Michael Penix or Bo Nix, or even further down the line, someone like Spencer Rattler.”
Perry recognizes Penix’s strong promise even if he carries a lot of risk and a first-round selection may be out of the question.
About Penix, Perry remarked, “He comes with a range of worries.” When it comes to the intangibles, he is exceptional. However, he has experienced a great deal personally. He has had two knee problems that ended the season and two shoulder surgeries that ended the season. He has a lot of tenacity and has played some pretty good football in the past few years, but he is more of a second-round potential than some of these other players who are high first-round prospects.
Penix’s toughness, in Curran’s opinion, makes him a compelling choice for Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo and acting general manager Eliot Wolf. If New England decides to trade the third overall pick for a plethora of assets, Penix might be among the best quarterbacks available.
“Jerod Mayo and Eliot Wolf talked about toughness and how important it is to have both physical and mental resiliency when they come here,” Curran stated in reference to all of the quarterback prospects.
“In my opinion, Penix, it would be fantastic if you were to trade down and acquire Michael Penix, as it would provide artillery to cover wide receiver, offensive tackle, cornerback, edge, and most of those positions. That’s fantastic.
The Patriots should be able to pick well in this draft in many respects. Even though they might make mistakes once the player arrives, the quarterback they choose will be competent enough to start in the NFL.”
April 25 is the day that the NFL Draft in 2024 will begin.
