“I’m Not Sure If I Will Be Back Anytime Soon, But I Know I’m Recovering Fast,” Says Taylor Decker
Detroit Lions offensive tackle Taylor Decker provided an update on his recovery from a recent injury, expressing confidence in his progress but uncertainty about his return timeline. The 29-year-old lineman, who has been a cornerstone of the Lions’ offensive line since being drafted in 2016, spoke candidly about the challenges he’s faced in recovering from a significant injury sustained earlier in the season.
Decker, who has been a key protector for quarterback Jared Goff and a critical part of Detroit’s offensive line, went down with a shoulder injury during the Lions’ Week 6 matchup. Initially, the injury raised concerns about his availability for the rest of the season, as Decker had been playing through the pain and was clearly a vital component of the team’s offensive success.
In a recent interview, Decker addressed his injury and the ongoing recovery process, acknowledging the frustration of being sidelined but expressing optimism about his healing. “I’m not sure if I will be back anytime soon, but I know I’m recovering fast,” Decker said. “It’s tough to watch the games from the sidelines, but I’m doing everything I can to get back out there as quickly as possible. The rehab has been going well, and I feel stronger every day. It’s just a matter of being patient and making sure I’m fully ready to go when I return.”
Decker’s injury has put a strain on the Lions’ offensive line, with backup players stepping in to fill his spot. While the team has had success in adapting, Decker’s leadership and experience have been sorely missed. His absence was particularly noticeable in pass protection, where his ability to block and set the edge has been key to Detroit’s offensive line success. Despite this, the Lions have remained competitive, sitting in the playoff hunt, thanks in part to a strong season from their offensive skill players.
The injury occurred during a critical stretch of the season, and Decker’s absence has prompted the coaching staff to adjust their strategies. However, head coach Dan Campbell has expressed confidence in Decker’s recovery and his eventual return. “Taylor is an important piece for us. His leadership on the line is invaluable, and we know he’s doing everything he can to get back,” Campbell said. “We’re focused on his long-term health and making sure that when he’s back, he’s at full strength.”
Decker’s dedication to the recovery process is evident, as he has been diligently working with the team’s medical staff to regain full mobility in his shoulder. The offensive tackle has kept a positive attitude despite the setbacks, focusing on what he can control—rehabilitation and staying mentally prepared. “It’s about staying in the game mentally, being there for my teammates, and helping them where I can,” he noted. “Even though I can’t be out there on the field, I’m still doing what I can to be a leader and support the guys.”
The Lions have a bye week approaching, giving Decker a little more time to focus on his recovery. While it remains unclear exactly when he will be cleared to return to action, the team’s medical staff and Decker himself are prioritizing his long-term health, understanding that rushing back too soon could lead to further complications. As Decker continues to work through his rehabilitation, his hope is that he’ll be back at full strength as soon as possible, helping to anchor the Lions’ offensive line once again.
For now, Decker remains focused on his recovery, determined to get back on the field as soon as he is physically ready. “I’ve always prided myself on being out there for my team, so this is tough,” he said. “But I trust the process, and I know when I’m back, I’ll be ready to play at the level I know I’m capable of.”
As the Lions prepare for the second half of the season, they will continue to rely on the depth and versatility of their offensive line. With Decker’s eventual return on the horizon, the team is optimistic that they will regain one of their most important players in the near future.
