Updates – Jannik sinner bluntly responds to kyrgios attacks.
World No. 1 tennis player Jannik Sinner has chosen not to engage with Nick Kyrgios’ recent criticisms concerning his doping case. Sinner, who tested positive for the banned substance clostebol in March 2024, was initially cleared by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) after it was determined that the doping was unintentional, attributed to a spray used by his physiotherapist. Despite this, Kyrgios has been vocal in his disapproval of the lenient treatment Sinner received.
In a press conference ahead of the Australian Open, Sinner was questioned about Kyrgios’ comments. He responded, “I don’t think I have to answer this, to be honest.” He further stated, “I haven’t done anything wrong. That’s why I’m still here. That’s why I’m still playing. I don’t want to respond on what Nick said or what other players say.” Sinner emphasized the importance of surrounding himself with trusted individuals who are aware of the situation.
Kyrgios’ criticism has been persistent, with suggestions that his disapproval may be influenced by personal factors. Tennis commentator Jon Wertheim speculated that Kyrgios’ attacks could be related to Sinner’s relationship with Anna Kalinskaya, Kyrgios’ ex-girlfriend. This has led to accusations that Kyrgios harbors a “personal vendetta” against Sinner.
Despite the ongoing scrutiny, Sinner remains focused on his tennis career. He is set to defend his title at the Australian Open, with his opening match against Chilean player Nicolás Jarry. Sinner’s doping case is scheduled for a hearing at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in April, following an appeal by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) after the initial ITIA ruling.
The situation has sparked debate within the tennis community, with some players and commentators questioning the transparency and consistency of anti-doping regulations. Former US Open champion Andy Roddick publicly disagreed with Kyrgios’ stance, highlighting Kyrgios’ tendency to seek attention and questioning his motives.
As the Australian Open progresses, all eyes will be on Sinner to see how he performs amid the ongoing controversy. His decision to remain silent on Kyrgios’ attacks reflects a focus on his game and a desire to let his performance speak for itself.
