Penn State’s head wrestling coach, Cael Sanderson, has been honored as the Big Ten Coach of the Year for the sixth time in his illustrious career. This accolade follows the Nittany Lions’ dominant performance at the 2025 Big Ten Championships, where they secured their third consecutive conference title, amassing a program-record 181.5 points.
Since assuming leadership of Penn State’s wrestling program in 2009, Sanderson has transformed the team into a powerhouse, capturing nine Big Ten Championships and multiple NCAA titles. His coaching philosophy emphasizes technical excellence, mental toughness, and a holistic approach to athlete development, which has been instrumental in the team’s sustained success.
Under Sanderson’s guidance, all ten Nittany Lion wrestlers have qualified for the 2025 NCAA Championships in Philadelphia, underscoring the depth and talent cultivated within the program. As the team prepares for nationals, Sanderson’s leadership continues to inspire both his athletes and the broader wrestling community.
In addition to Sanderson’s recognition, Penn State’s Carter Starocci was named the Big Ten Wrestler of the Year, reflecting the individual excellence fostered under Sanderson’s mentorship. These accolades highlight the program’s commitment to excellence and its prominent position in collegiate wrestling.
