What Super Bowl Winner Warns Patriots About CONCERNING Drake Maye

Super Bowl Winner Warns Patriots About Drake Maye
A former Super Bowl champion has issued a strong warning to the New England Patriots regarding rookie quarterback Drake Maye, urging the organization to proceed with caution as they develop the young prospect. The message comes amid growing hype and pressure surrounding Maye, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, who is expected to be the franchise’s next great hope under center.
The warning was delivered by former NFL wide receiver and Super Bowl champion Plaxico Burress, who spoke during a recent appearance on a sports talk show. Burress expressed concern that the Patriots could harm Maye’s long-term success if they rush him into action too soon. “They need to take their time with this kid,” he said. “He’s talented, no doubt. But the NFL will eat you alive if you’re not ready.”
Burress pointed to examples of quarterbacks who were thrown into starting roles prematurely, only to struggle or fade from the league. He emphasized that New England’s coaching staff and front office must build a solid foundation around Maye, including offensive line protection, reliable targets, and a patient developmental plan.
The Patriots, entering a new era under head coach Jerod Mayo, face immense pressure to rebound from recent losing seasons. Maye, known for his big arm and athleticism at North Carolina, has shown flashes of brilliance during offseason workouts. Still, the team has veteran Jacoby Brissett as a potential bridge starter, which could allow Maye more time to learn.
The Patriots have yet to confirm their Week 1 starter, but Burress’s comments serve as a reminder: raw talent needs the right environment to thrive. Rushing Drake Maye could derail a promising career before it ever truly begins.
