Emotional Moment: Rockies Honor Late White Sox Star Bobby Jenks Before Game
In a heartfelt pregame ceremony at Coors Field on Saturday, the Colorado Rockies paid tribute to the late Bobby Jenks, the former Chicago White Sox closer and 2005 World Series champion who passed away earlier this week.
Before the first pitch against the White Sox, both teams paused to reflect on Jenks’ impact on the game. A moment of silence was observed as a photo montage played on the stadium’s big screen, highlighting Jenks’ electrifying career and unforgettable postseason performance during Chicago’s historic 2005 title run.
Jenks, known for his blazing fastball and fierce mound presence, played a pivotal role in securing the White Sox’s first World Series championship in 88 years. His dominance in the postseason made him a fan favorite and a legend on the South Side of Chicago.
Though he never played for Colorado, the Rockies’ gesture spoke volumes about the broader brotherhood within Major League Baseball. The tribute was especially poignant given the White Sox were the visiting team, creating a shared space of remembrance and respect.
Rockies manager Bud Black offered words of admiration before the game, stating, “Bobby was a fierce competitor and a true champion. Today’s game is bigger than baseball — it’s about honoring someone who left a lasting mark on the sport.”
Several White Sox players and coaches wore black armbands in Jenks’ memory, and many visibly emotional fans in both Rockies and White Sox gear stood united during the tribute.
Jenks’ career was tragically cut short by health issues, but his legacy remains deeply etched in MLB history. Saturday’s ceremony served as a powerful reminder that the baseball community, though divided by teams, is united in moments of loss.
As the game began, the spirit of Bobby Jenks lingered — a silent but mighty presence on the field he once dominated.
