Boone: Reigning AL Rookie of the Year Luis Gil to Begin Rehab Assignment
New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed Tuesday that reigning American League Rookie of the Year Luis Gil will begin a rehab assignment this week as he continues his recovery from an elbow injury. Gil, who has been sidelined since early June with right elbow inflammation, is expected to make his first rehab appearance in the minor leagues within the next few days.
Gil, 26, was having a breakout season before the injury, compiling a 9-3 record with a 2.52 ERA and 112 strikeouts over 96.1 innings. His electric fastball and improved command made him a vital piece of the Yankees’ rotation, helping the team maintain its position near the top of the AL East standings.
Boone expressed optimism about Gil’s progress, noting that the right-hander has been throwing bullpen sessions without setbacks. “He’s feeling good, the ball is coming out well, and he’s excited to get back on the mound in game action,” Boone said. “This is an important step, and we’ll take it outing by outing.”
If all goes smoothly, Gil could return to the Yankees by late July or early August, providing a significant boost to a rotation that has battled injuries and inconsistency. His return would come just in time for the stretch run as New York pushes toward the postseason.
