Sophie Cunningham Calls Caitlin Clark Haters ‘Dumb as F–k’ for Saying She’s Not the Face of WNBA
Phoenix Mercury guard Sophie Cunningham didn’t hold back when it came to defending Caitlin Clark against critics who question her place as the face of the WNBA. In a candid interview, Cunningham responded to ongoing debate surrounding Clark’s popularity and impact, calling out detractors in blunt terms.
“People who say Caitlin isn’t the face of the WNBA are dumb as f–k,” Cunningham said. “She’s bringing more eyes to the league than we’ve had in years. Whether you like it or not, she’s changing the game.”
Clark, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft, has been under intense scrutiny since joining the Indiana Fever. While her rookie campaign has featured ups and downs, her presence has sparked record-breaking attendance, increased national media coverage, and a surge in merchandise sales. Despite this, some players and fans have argued that Clark has received disproportionate attention at the expense of other league veterans and stars.
Cunningham, known for her competitive fire and outspoken nature, dismissed those criticisms as shortsighted. “This league needs stars. We need storylines. We need people tuning in. Caitlin brings that. And guess what? It’s helping all of us. More fans, more sponsors, more respect.”
Cunningham also emphasized the importance of embracing the new wave of talent. “There’s room for everyone. You can celebrate Caitlin and still support A’ja Wilson, Breanna Stewart, Diana Taurasi, and the rest. We don’t have to tear one person down to lift another up.”
Clark has largely remained composed amid the noise, continuing to focus on her game. Her performances on the court—and the media frenzy surrounding her—have made her one of the most talked-about athletes in women’s sports.
With players like Cunningham in her corner, it’s clear Clark has strong allies within the league, and the conversation about her impact is far from over.
