Yankees Catcher Had Brutally Honest Take on What Team Must Do to Stop Struggles
As the New York Yankees continue to slide in the standings, one player is refusing to sugarcoat the team’s struggles. Catcher Jose Trevino, known for his leadership behind the plate, offered a brutally honest assessment following the Yankees’ latest loss — and he didn’t hold back.
“We’re not playing good baseball,” Trevino said after Sunday’s defeat. “There’s no other way to put it. We’re not executing. We’re not doing the little things right. And that’s on us as players.”
The Yankees, once atop the AL East earlier this season, have now lost 11 of their last 15 games, plagued by inconsistent hitting, sloppy defense, and bullpen issues. The offense, which was once considered one of the most dangerous in the league, has gone cold, struggling to string together hits or capitalize with runners in scoring position.
Trevino, a veteran presence in the clubhouse, believes the solution starts with accountability.
“It’s not just about making adjustments in the cage or on the mound,” he said. “It’s about holding each other accountable — on the field and off it. We need to play with urgency and a chip on our shoulder. This is New York. Expectations are high. And right now, we’re not meeting them.”
He also emphasized the importance of unity, pointing out that frustration can’t turn into finger-pointing.
“There’s no magic fix. No one guy’s going to come in and save the day. We have to do it together. That means trusting the guy next to you and bringing energy every day, no matter how tough it gets.”
With the season entering a critical stretch, Trevino’s comments reflect the growing tension in the Yankees’ clubhouse. Whether the team can respond to that challenge remains to be seen — but one thing is clear: the time for excuses is over.
As Trevino put it bluntly: “We either figure it out now, or we don’t.”
