Yankees’ Trent Grisham Broke Out His Best Mario Outfit After Clutch Home Run
The New York Yankees’ clubhouse got an unexpected dose of video game nostalgia this weekend, courtesy of outfielder Trent Grisham. After delivering a clutch, go-ahead home run in the late innings against the Boston Red Sox, Grisham surprised teammates — and fans — by showing up in the postgame celebration dressed head-to-toe as the beloved Nintendo character Mario.
The moment came after one of Grisham’s most impactful at-bats of the season. With the score tied in the eighth inning, he launched a fastball deep into the right-field seats, giving the Yankees a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. The Bronx crowd erupted, but the real fun began after the final out.
Back in the locker room, reporters and players were greeted by the sight of Grisham in overalls, a bright red shirt, a matching cap emblazoned with the iconic “M,” and even a faux mustache. “It’s-a me, Trent-o!” he joked, mimicking Mario’s catchphrase.
The outfit, Grisham later explained, was part of a friendly bet with teammate Gleyber Torres. “We’ve been talking about who could come up with the most creative celebration,” Grisham said. “I told him if I came through in a big moment, I’d go full Mario. And I keep my word.”
Social media lit up with photos and videos of the scene, with fans praising both the clutch hit and the lighthearted nod to a cultural icon. Some even called for the Yankees to make “Super Mario Night” a regular promotional event.
Manager Aaron Boone laughed when asked about it. “Hey, whatever works,” Boone said. “If dressing like Mario helps him hit bombs, I’ll buy the costume myself.”
For the Yankees, the victory tightened their grip on a playoff spot — and for Grisham, it was proof that sometimes, a little fun can be just as important as the win itself.
