Yet Another Yankees Trade Deadline Addition Hits Injured List to Add to Misery
The New York Yankees’ turbulent stretch run took another hit on Sunday, as newly acquired utilityman Amed Rosario was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left sternoclavicular (SC) joint sprain, retroactive to August 9. Rosario suffered the injury in dramatic fashion during Friday’s loss, crashing into the right-field wall while chasing a fly ball.
Rosario, picked up in a deadline deal from the Tampa Bay Rays, had offered immediate value, going 3-for-7 with an RBI in just four games with New York. His combination of defensive versatility and contact hitting was expected to provide a steadying presence for a lineup riddled with inconsistency. Instead, he joins a growing list of sidelined Yankees, raising questions about whether the team’s deadline reinforcements will make any impact at all.
Just days ago, fellow trade-deadline pickup Austin Slater landed on the IL with a hamstring strain, expected to keep him out four to six weeks. Both players were intended to bolster New York’s right-handed bench depth, giving manager Aaron Boone more matchup flexibility against tough left-handed pitching. With both gone, that plan is now in shambles.
In a corresponding move, the Yankees recalled catcher J.C. Escarra from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. While Escarra offers depth behind the plate, his role will likely be limited, leaving Boone to shuffle his remaining position players in search of consistency.
The timing couldn’t be worse. The Yankees are in the thick of the American League Wild Card race, battling not only divisional rivals but also a rash of injuries to key contributors, including Aaron Judge, who is working his way back from an elbow flexor strain.
Despite the setbacks, there was a glimmer of hope this weekend when starter Luis Gil delivered a sharp bounce-back outing against Houston. But with Rosario and Slater both unavailable for the foreseeable future, the margin for error grows thinner by the day—and so does the patience of a frustrated fan base.
For now, the Yankees’ deadline shopping spree has done little more than add names to the injured list.
