Texas Longhorns Football: Rising Stars Who Could Dominate the Big 12

As the Texas Longhorns prepare for the 2024 football season, they are not only focused on building a championship contender but also on developing the next generation of stars who could redefine the Big 12 Conference. With a talented roster brimming with potential, several players are poised to take the spotlight this season, making their mark on both the Longhorns’ program and the broader landscape of college football.

One of the most exciting rising stars for Texas is quarterback Quinn Ewers, who enters his third season as the team’s starting signal-caller. Ewers, a former five-star recruit, has shown flashes of brilliance in his first two seasons with the Longhorns, but his consistency has often been a point of concern. However, in 2024, the spotlight is squarely on him to lead Texas to the next level. After an offseason of focused development, including working closely with head coach Steve Sarkisian and the offensive coaching staff, Ewers is expected to take a significant leap in his decision-making and accuracy. With his cannon of an arm and natural talent, Ewers has the potential to dominate the Big 12 and put Texas back into College Football Playoff contention. If he can stay healthy and improve on his chemistry with the wide receivers, he could be one of the most dynamic quarterbacks in the country.

Alongside Ewers in the backfield, the Texas Longhorns will feature a talented group of running backs. With the departure of Bijan Robinson, one of the most electrifying running backs in college football, there’s a big hole to fill, but Texas is more than equipped to handle the loss. Sophomore Jonathan Brooks is primed for a breakout year. Brooks showed glimpses of his potential last season, and now, with an increased role in the offense, he is expected to take the reins as the lead back. His combination of vision, speed, and power makes him a perfect fit for the Longhorns’ zone-blocking scheme. Brooks could easily become one of the top running backs in the Big 12, putting up impressive numbers in both the rushing and receiving game.

On the outside, wide receiver Xavier Worthy remains one of the most electrifying playmakers in college football. Entering his junior season, Worthy has already established himself as one of the top wideouts in the Big 12, and with Ewers poised for a breakout year, he could reach new heights. Worthy’s elite speed and ball skills make him a constant deep threat, but he’s also developed into a more complete receiver, capable of running a full route tree and making plays after the catch. In 2024, he could be a top contender for All-Big 12 honors and perhaps even garner national recognition as one of the best in the nation.

Defensively, Texas is primed to showcase some rising stars as well. Defensive lineman T’Vondre Sweat has been a force for the Longhorns, and his impact on the game has the potential to increase exponentially in 2024. Sweat is known for his size, strength, and ability to disrupt the line of scrimmage, and as the anchor of the Texas defensive front, he could be one of the most dominant players in the Big 12 this season. Alongside him, linebacker Jaylan Ford will be a key leader on the defense. Ford, who has impressed with his football IQ and ability to cover ground, is expected to take a step forward and emerge as one of the conference’s top linebackers.

Finally, in the secondary, safety Jerrin Thompson is poised to become a breakout star. Thompson’s ability to read the quarterback’s eyes and his knack for being around the ball make him a dangerous asset in both pass coverage and run support. With a full offseason to hone his skills, Thompson could become one of the top defensive backs in the Big 12.

With a blend of experienced leaders and emerging talent, the Texas Longhorns have a roster loaded with rising stars ready to dominate the Big 12 in 2024. The potential for players like Quinn Ewers, Jonathan Brooks, Xavier Worthy, T’Vondre Sweat, and Jerrin Thompson to elevate their games could propel Texas to new heights, and the Longhorns are poised to be a force to be reckoned with in the conference for years to come.
