Red Sox Focus on Pitching, Select Three College Arms with First Four Picks on Day 1 of MLB Draft
The Boston Red Sox made a strong statement on Day 1 of the 2025 MLB Draft, using three of their first four picks to select college pitchers, reinforcing their commitment to bolstering pitching depth in the farm system.
With their first-round pick (12th overall), the Red Sox selected right-hander Ryan Sloan from Wake Forest, a power arm known for his mid-90s fastball and refined secondary pitches. Sloan projects as a potential mid-rotation starter and arrives with significant experience in high-leverage college matchups.
In the second round, Boston turned to the SEC, picking up left-hander Carson Montgomery out of Florida. Montgomery impressed scouts with his command improvements and deceptive delivery, and he could move quickly through the minor league ranks with continued development.
Their competitive balance round B pick was used on outfielder Micah Bell from UCLA, breaking the pitching trend with a speedy, athletic prospect who adds versatility and top-of-the-order potential to the organization.
The team returned to the mound in the third round, selecting right-hander Jack Finnegan from Texas A&M. Known for his strike-throwing ability and mature approach, Finnegan adds another layer of depth to a Boston system looking to cultivate durable, efficient arms.
By focusing on proven collegiate arms early, the Red Sox appear determined to strengthen their pitching foundation and accelerate talent toward the big-league roster.
