News Update: Inside UNC’s ‘Brutally Difficult’ Decision To Fire Hubert Davis

Chapel Hill, NC – The University of North Carolina made the stunning decision to part ways with men’s basketball coach Hubert Davis on Tuesday night, a move that ends a five-year tenure marked by both a miraculous Final Four run and a troubling pattern of inconsistency. While the official announcement cited a need to “compete more consistently at an elite level,” sources indicate the decision was a “brutally difficult” one .

The final blow came just days earlier when the Tar Heels suffered a historic collapse against VCU in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, blowing a 19-point lead in an overtime loss—the largest comeback in a first-round game in tournament history . It was a devastating end to a season that began with promise but ultimately exposed the deep fractures within the program.

For Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham and incoming AD Steve Newmark, the recommendation to Chancellor Lee Roberts was ultimately about the future. Despite a late influx of financial support from prominent donors and former players who wanted Davis to remain, the decision was made to move in a different direction . The school will honor the roughly $5.3 million buyout remaining on Davis’s contract .

A Tenure of Peaks and Valleys

Hubert Davis, a beloved former player under Dean Smith and Roy Williams’ hand-picked successor, was hired in 2021 to carry on a legacy . His tenure was a roller coaster .

· The Highs: In his first season, Davis led the Tar Heels on an unforgettable run to the 2022 National Championship game, which included a legendary victory over Duke in Coach Mike Krzyzewski’s final home game and again in the Final Four . He followed that with an ACC regular-season title and a No. 1 seed in 2024 .

· The Lows: However, those peaks were overshadowed by historic valleys. In 2023, UNC became the first preseason No. 1 team in the modern era to miss the NCAA Tournament entirely . This season’s first-round exit marked the third time in four years the Tar Heels failed to advance past the Round of 64 .

Davis finished his tenure with a 125-54 record, but the inconsistency proved too much for a program accustomed to sustained dominance .

The End of the “Carolina Family”

The decision to fire Davis represents a seismic shift in Chapel Hill. For the first time in nearly 75 years, UNC will likely hire a coach without deep ties to the “Carolina family” . The coaching tree that stretched from Frank McGuire to Dean Smith to Roy Williams has no clear successor ready to take over .

“Everyone would choose, we’ve got to be competitive,” a source briefed on the search told The Athletic . Incoming AD Steve Newmark emphasized that the goal is “to make sure we get the best candidate possible,” even if it means breaking from tradition .

The Search and a New Era

The search has officially begun, and the school has hired executive search firm Turnkey ZRG to assist . However, the pursuit of top-tier candidates has already proven difficult. Billy Donovan (Chicago Bulls), Tommy Lloyd (Arizona), and Dusty May (Michigan) have all been linked to the job, but early overtures have been met with resistance or delays .

With the transfer portal looming and the roster needing to be rebuilt, UNC is facing pressure to make a decision quickly . Incoming coach Michael Malone, a former NBA champion coach, has been reported to be hired, though the search firm continues to evaluate options . The next coach will not only need to win games but also modernize the program’s approach to NIL and roster management—areas where Davis was criticized for being slow to adapt .

In a statement, Davis said, “My desire was to continue to coach here… My goal is to coach again in the very near future” . But for North Carolina, the “brutally difficult” decision signals the end of an era and the beginning of an uncertain, modern future.
