Alabama’s Quarterback Battle Heats Up: Ryan Grubb Provides Update on Keelon Russell and Austin Mack

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama Crimson Tide’s quarterback competition remains the most compelling storyline of fall camp, and offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb offered the clearest picture yet on Thursday of where things stand between contenders Keelon Russell and Austin Mack.

Speaking after the second day of fall camp, Grubb detailed the specific improvements each quarterback has made since the spring, outlined the timeline for a decision, and emphasized that the competition remains as tight as ever.

“Both guys are growing,” Grubb said. “I think the attention to detail right now is on the things they know they got to work on. Each one of them has different strengths and weaknesses”.

Areas of Improvement: Taking Care of the Ball and Mobility

Grubb provided a direct assessment of the development each quarterback has shown over the summer months.

For the former five-star recruit Russell, the focus has been on ball security. “I’d say Keelon did a better job taking care of the football in the summer than he did in the spring,” Grubb stated. This is a critical area for the redshirt freshman, as protecting the football is a foundational requirement for earning the starting nod under head coach Kalen DeBoer.

For Mack, the more experienced player who followed DeBoer from Washington, the emphasis has been on extending plays. “And then with Austin, I thought he was better on the run out of the pocket. I thought he really grew in that regard,” Grubb noted. While Mack has the edge in system familiarity, improving his mobility adds a new dimension to his game, though analysts note the fundamental difference in their athletic profiles.

The Athletic Difference: Russell’s Feet vs. Mack’s Arm and Size

Grubb acknowledged the distinct physical traits each quarterback brings to the table. While both possess elite arm talent, the differentiating factor is Russell’s dual-threat ability.

“Keelon is a really, really good athlete. I think his feet probably come into play… there is a piece of athleticism there with Keelon that’s different from some guys,” Grubb said. He emphasized that Mack is not immobile—noting his scramble ability—but that Russell’s athleticism offers a different dynamic, reminiscent of previous Alabama quarterbacks who added a running threat.

Despite the athletic contrast, Grubb was emphatic that their passing skills are evenly matched. “Arm talent, they’re both supremely talented as far as pushing the ball all over the field. There’s not going to be a throw I have in the game plan that I have for one but couldn’t do with the other,” Grubb said. He described both as having quick releases, with accuracy being a shared area of focus, adding that aside from Russell’s running ability and their physical size difference—Mack is listed at 6-foot-6, Russell at 6-foot-3—the quarterbacks are “very similar guys”.

Timeline for a Starter: The Scrimmages Will Decide

One of the key takeaways from Grubb’s Thursday press conference was the timeline for naming a starter. Unlike last year, when Ty Simpson was named QB1 on August 11th, this decision may extend deeper into fall camp.

Grubb indicated that the staff will rely heavily on performance in live scrimmage situations. “Just younger guys, making sure we have every ounce of data we need,” Grubb said. “But if it’s the first scrimmage, it’s the first scrimmage. If we feel good about that after that point, we’ll name that”.

Alabama’s first fall scrimmage is scheduled for Thursday, August 13th. Grubb confirmed that the coaching staff will need to see how both Mack and Russell perform in both scheduled scrimmages before making a final decision, suggesting the battle will extend into the second and third weeks of camp.

Grubb also noted that the process mirrors the timing used by DeBoer’s staff going back to their Fresno State days in 2021, ensuring both quarterbacks receive equal opportunity. “It’ll be very similar to the timing last year and that we’ve done every year back to 2021 at Fresno State. So, same mechanics on that, and the guys will be getting an equal opportunity and are doing a good job,” he said.

The Bigger Picture: Leadership and Offensive Balance

While the quarterback battle dominates headlines, head coach Kalen DeBoer has stressed that the decision goes beyond physical tools. DeBoer emphasized during the first week of practice that he is looking for consistency and leadership from his signal-caller.

“I thought they were consistent,” DeBoer said of the first practice. “A couple of explosive plays in there… Just the little details. I thought they were consistent. I loved the demeanor, their command”. He stressed that the quarterbacks must demonstrate resilience and the ability to lead the offense, especially considering the youth around them. “We’re identifying leaders beyond the guys that we expect to be able to stand up when needed and take charge,” DeBoer added.

Former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy also weighed in on the situation, suggesting that while either Russell or Mack would be an excellent option, the true X-factor for the 2026 offense will be the running game. “Everybody wants to talk about the quarterback spot… But in reality, whoever they go with quarterback, whether it’s Austin Mack or Keelon Russell, they’re going to be just fine,” McElroy said. He noted that Alabama’s run game, which averaged less than 3.5 yards per carry last year (ranking 125th nationally), must improve to take pressure off the new starter.

As fall camp progresses, the staff will continue to evaluate Mack and Russell in practice and scrimmages, with the eventual goal of selecting the quarterback who best controls the offense, protects the football, and commands the locker room.
