The FINAL stretch of Alabama’s QB battle is here

The final chapter of the most talked-about quarterback competition in college football is being written on the practice fields of Tuscaloosa.

As the calendar flips to August, the Alabama Crimson Tide are deep into fall camp with the weight of a national championship-caliber roster resting on a decision that has captivated the sport for months. Head coach Kalen DeBoer is entering his third year at the helm, but the identity of his 2026 offense hinges on one monumental question: Austin Mack or Keelon Russell.

The battle to replace Ty Simpson—now a first-round pick of the Los Angeles Rams—is not just the biggest storyline for the Crimson Tide; it stands as the most significant quarterback competition in the country. While the race appears to be a dead heat, the coaching staff is nearing the point of no return, looking for the intangible quality that will separate a good quarterback from a championship leader as they prepare for the September 5th opener against East Carolina.

The Contenders: Experience vs. Ceiling

The decision facing DeBoer and offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb is a classic modern college football conundrum, pitting veteran system knowledge against elite, game-breaking potential.

Austin Mack represents the known commodity. The redshirt junior is the veteran in the room, having followed DeBoer from Washington to Alabama. He has been immersed in the offensive system since 2023 and served as the primary backup to Simpson last season. In 2025, Mack completed 24 of 32 passes for 228 yards and two touchdowns, accumulating valuable experience that included a notable appearance in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal loss to Indiana, where he stepped in for an injured Simpson and threw for 103 yards. Sources have consistently noted that Mack was the “more consistent game manager” during the spring practices, offering the coaching staff a steadier hand and a deep trust in the playbook.

Keelon Russell, on the other hand, is the future knocking on the door. The sophomore was the crown jewel of the 2025 recruiting class, rated as the No. 2 overall recruit in the nation and the 2025 Gatorade National High School Player of the Year. His high school career was dazzling, throwing for over 3,000 yards and 50 touchdowns as a senior. While he has only seen limited action in blowout wins, completing 11 of 15 passes for two touchdowns, his ceiling is viewed as sky-high. Analysts and insiders suggest that Alabama paid a significant NIL package to sign Russell and purposely avoided adding a transfer quarterback to avoid scaring him off, hinting that the program is “pulling for him to win the job”.

The Voices of Experience: Saban and McElroy Weigh In

The intense scrutiny on the position has drawn commentary from some of the most respected voices in Alabama football history. Nick Saban, the legendary former head coach, offered his thoughts on the battle, speaking specifically about Russell’s potential. Saban noted the young quarterback’s playmaking ability but deferred to the current coaching staff’s judgment on his readiness, stating that regardless of the decision, “Both these guys are capable”.

Greg McElroy, the former Alabama quarterback turned ESPN analyst, provided a nuanced breakdown of how the competition might ultimately be decided. While praising the talent of both players, McElroy suggested that the health of Alabama’s rebuilt offensive line and the overall rushing attack could dictate the winner. McElroy posited that Russell’s mobility might be the deciding factor if the offensive line struggles to replicate a successful run game—a major concern after Alabama ranked 125th nationally in rushing yards in 2025. Conversely, if the line provides adequate protection, Mack’s experience as a game manager could win out. “If they can run the ball better without the quarterback, I think that increases the likelihood that it’ll be Austin Mack,” McElroy explained. “If for whatever reason they are struggling to run the football like last year, then maybe Keelon gets more of a shot.”

The DeBoer Decision: “Poise” Above All

As the team transitions from the offseason to the grind of fall camp, DeBoer has made it clear that the decision is not solely based on arm talent.

“Both of them are more than capable. I think they’re high-level, elite quarterbacks,” DeBoer said recently, emphasizing the difficulty of the choice ahead. However, DeBoer has consistently stressed one key factor that will determine the starter: poise.

He has pointed to “the poise to lead, the poise in the big moments” as a critical element that is hard to evaluate when a quarterback is not under live fire. While Russell is praised for his athleticism and ability to create plays, the staff is looking for command of the huddle, leadership, and the ability to handle the pressure of SEC football. DeBoer has also ruled out a two-quarterback system, wanting a single, consistent leader to take control of the offense. Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb has emphasized that the competition is “pretty even” and that reps have been split intentionally to give both a fair shot.

A Testament to Culture

Beyond the competition for the starting role, the fact that both quarterbacks are still in Tuscaloosa is a victory for the program’s culture in the modern NIL and transfer portal era. In an age where highly touted quarterbacks often transfer at the first sign of a depth chart challenge, both Mack and Russell have chosen to stay and battle it out. DeBoer has managed to retain two quarterbacks with legitimate claims to starting jobs, creating an environment where competition is valued over guaranteed playing time.

Paul Finebaum, the longtime SEC commentator, noted that the learning curve for the new quarterback will be critical, suggesting that Alabama’s relatively favorable early schedule—which includes a home game against Florida State but features manageable early SEC matchups—gives the staff some runway to settle the position without immediate disaster.

The Decision: The Final Countdown

With the season opener against East Carolina looming, the final stretch of camp will be the ultimate proving ground. Reports suggest that the sources in Tuscaloosa are leaning in Russell’s favor, with one source putting the odds at 60-40 that the young five-star will get the nod. However, the competition is widely considered too close to call, and the veteran presence of Mack ensures that the decision could go down to the wire.

The 2026 Alabama Crimson Tide have the pieces for a championship run, including a veteran secondary that returns all five starters and a defense capable of winning games. But for Kalen DeBoer, the final piece of the puzzle is finding the right leader for his offense. Whether it is the experience of Mack or the electrifying potential of Russell, the decision that emerges from the final days of fall camp will define Alabama’s season and set the stage for their quest to reclaim the top of the SEC and national standings.
