Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was full of praise for the impact that new Reds signings Alexis MacAllister and Dominik Szoboszlai made on their debut against Chelsea.
Klopp has hailed the impact of his new Liverpool signing Alexis MacAllister and Dominik Szoboszlai – whom he claims played in three positions against Chelsea.
A pulsating opening day encounter ended 1-1 at Stamford Bridge after Luis Diaz’s early goal for the Reds was cancelled out by debutant Axel Disasi’s equaliser for the hosts. Mohamed Salah and Ben Chilwell both had goals disallowed for offside in an end-to-end first half as each side was frustrated.
While most of the attention was on the home side under new boss Mauricio Pochettino and multiple debutants following another transfer window of mass change, there was a new-look Liverpool midfield headed by MacAllister and Szoboszlai.
Jordan Henderson and Fabinho were both sold to Saudi Arabia, following the exits of James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita as free agents. Those departures have left the Reds short on midfield options.
Their move for Moises Caicedo appears to have been trumped by Chelsea while Southampton star Romeo Lavia may also be on his way to Stamford Bridge ahead of Anfield. That has left Klopp with much to do, but he raved about the impact of his two new signings on the opening day.
Speaking to BBC Sport, Klopp said: “MacAllister is obviously a really good footballer which you saw around our first goal. The new players gave us a massive opportunity in offensive moments. Dom [Szoboszlai] is a beast, he played three positions today. Top boys, top players.”
