John W Henry can’t hide from what he saw at Chelsea vs Liverpool

The Reds owner was in London to see his side in action at Stamford Bridge, and after a bright opening their allowed their hosts back into the game due to a lack of numbers in midfield

John W Henryhad ridden in to west London with the expectation of meeting Liverpool’s new British record setting midfielder, but he’ll have left with an expensive headache.
With the Reds seemingly blocked from signing Moises Caicedo by Chelsea’s determination to hold on to a player they think they’ve had in the bag since May, there could not have been a bigger neon sign pointing towards Alexis Mac Allister at kick-off at Stamford Bridge.
The Argentinean is a fine player of course, and another one Henry has shelled out for this summer, but if he’s going to continue to be played this deep then Jurgen Klopp will be misusing his many talents.
Klopp doesn’t need to be told that, sanctioning the £110m move for Mac Allister’s former Brighton teammate confirms it, but to go into any first game of the season this light on numbers in a key area of the pitch is damaging, and against opponents as skilled as Chelsea even more so.
The setup deployed by Klopp from the start here does have its uses. It is likely that we see something like it – with four of Liverpool’s array of five talented attackers all starting matches – in several games going forward this season, but those games will have to be carefully chosen.
We saw what can happen when the system works well as it did for the first half hour, with Mo Salah thriving as he had so many options in attacking spaces to his left, Mac Allister available to hit him to pinpoint balls from range and Trent Alexander-Arnold to exchange passes with him on the right.
Liverpool should have been two or three up before they were no longer even one ahead, with Salah going close on three occasions and Luis Diaz looking lively independent of his well-taken goal.
