Liverpool transfer news including the latest on Bayern Munich midfielder Ryan Gravenberch
Liverpool are believed to have reactivated their interest in Ryan Gravenberch as the club looks to strengthen Jurgen Klopp’s midfield options.
The Netherlands international joined the German giants from Ajax last summer, but despite winning the Bundesliga during his maiden campaign with the club, Gravenberch was limited to only three league starts.
As a result, the 21-year-old has been linked with a move away from the Allianz Arena this summer in a bid to secure regular game time. And the ECHO understands that Liverpool have now reopened channels to explore interest in Gravenberch after initially placing the midfielder on a list of possible targets at the start of the window.
However, as things stand, Liverpool have only made initial contact, and there is no immediate suggestion that a deal will be pursued with Bayern for the midfielder. The Anfield club is believed to be assessing a number of midfield options after missing out on Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia.
Liverpool agreed an £111million deal with Brighton & Hove Albion for Caicedo on Friday, but the midfielder’s preference was always Chelsea. The London side finally succeeded with a bid for the Ecuador international on Sunday evening after having a succession of offers rejected.
Caicedo was then announced as a Chelsea player on Monday night, with news emerging hours later that Lavia was also set to snub the Reds in favour of a move to Stamford Bridge. Chelsea are set to pay £53m plus £5m in add-ons for the Belgium international.
Reflecting on his lack of minutes at Bayern last season, Gravenberch told Dutch outlet AD in June: “The difference from playing everything at Ajax to sitting on the bench for eighty or even ninety minutes each time was both physically and mentally tough.
“I found that especially difficult before the winter break. Now I handle it better. I assume that I will still be playing for Bayern next season.
“That’s really how I feel about it. I’m in a top-three club in the world. I think that’s beautiful and special. I’m not giving up easily. My goal is still to succeed at Bayern.”
Further bolstering the midfield remains a priority, despite Liverpool having signed Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai. However, it remains to be seen how the club will proceed after the double disappointment with Caicedo and Lavia.
