Liverpool’s efforts to sign Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo were well documented, but it has been reported that another Premier League midfielder has been identified following the sale of Fabinho.
Fabinho has become the youngest player to join the Saudi Pro League in a £40m deal to join Karim Benzema and N’Golo Kante at Al-Ittihad.Athletic have reported that Aston Villa’s Boubacar Kamara was on a list of ‘possible replacements’ after the 29-year-old left the club somewhat unprepared.
Liverpool analysts have reportedly started ‘sharing information’ on possible alternatives following the Brazilian’s loss, with Kamara naming Lavia and Caicedo alongside other public targets.
Jurgen Klopp had planned to start the 2023/24 season with Fabinho and Jordan Henderson, but the two’s departures to the Middle East made the signing of the No.6 even more necessary. Both Lavia and Caicedo rejected Liverpool’s approach to join Mauricio Pochettino at Stamford Bridge, with Japanese captain Wataru Endo eventually getting a £16.25m deal from Stuttgart.
There are very few reliable reports linking Kamara to a move to Anfield, but his position and Premier League experience at Villa Park mean he would undoubtedly meet a number of criteria.
Kamara has 26 major caps to his name for England and has earned three caps for an impressive French international.
At 23, he is at a point in his career that the Reds usually like to focus on and has been deployed at centre-back during his time at Marseille which could serve him well from a versatility standpoint.
Reports earlier this week indicated that the Reds have no plans to add another ‘specialist’ in defensive midfield this summer following Endo’s arrival, but are instead looking for a ‘multi-purpose’ option. Kamara’s flexibility could land him in that category and the summer signings of Dominik Szoboszlai and Endo have already proven that goals aren’t necessarily always common knowledge.
With just over a week to play, it remains to be seen whether Kamara will be among the names Liverpool sign late.
