After Man City’s transfer, Alan Shearer now believes Liverpool could recruit a midfielder for £45 million.
As Man City nears a £60 million deal to get Matheus Nunes, Alan Shearer predicts Liverpool will sign Kalvin Phillips.
Following Pep Guardiola’s acquisition of Matheus Nunes, Alan Shearer thinks Liverpool may decide to sign Man City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.
To bolster their midfield, City is reportedly closing in on a £60 million agreement to acquire the Wolves player. After the FA investigation into an alleged betting rule violation put an end to their pursuit of West Ham’s Lucas Paqueta, Guardiola turned his attention to Portuguese international Nunes, who was formerly a target for Liverpool.
Wolves turned down City’s initial £47 million offer for Nunes, but City is now poised to agree to a greater sum after the 25-year-old skipped training in an effort to force the transfer through. For over £42 million last summer, Nunes transferred from Sporting CP to Wolves.
Shearer, a former striker for Newcastle, thinks that City’s efforts to get Nunes may cause them to let Phillips leave the team after a trying first season; Liverpool has been mentioned as a potential destination.
Senior Liverpool sources had already ruled out a deal for Phillips, and now that Wataru Endo has been acquired for £16 million from Stuttgart, it’s uncertain if the Reds would pursue another midfielder before the transfer market ends on Friday.
Phillips paid £45 million to come from Leeds United to City last summer, but he has battled with his fitness and form, drawing public ire from Guardiola, who said he was overweight.
