Where would Ryan Gravenberch fit in the manager’s current system the most likely now that a prospective deal to sign him is moving forward?
On Wednesday night, word spread that the Reds and Bayern Munich were in “talks” about bringing the midfielder to Anfield in the last days of the transfer market.
Many fans still think that the defensive midfield position is still the priority, which has caused some uncertainty among supporters about the role that the Dutchman would be expected to play should he arrive.
Following the acquisition of Wataru Endo, reports earlier this month indicated that Liverpool wasn’t aiming to recruit another No. 6 player this summer.
It was rumored that the plans were to recruit a “multi-functional” midfielder instead, and the most recent sources confirm this.
Although Gravenberch is normally thought of as a standard center-midfielder, there have been rumors that Liverpool thinks he can be used more defensively.
Although he hasn’t had much experience playing defensive midfield in the Bundesliga, the Dutchman did split his time between the No. 6 and No. 8 positions while he was at Ajax.
In 17 of his 103 games for Ajax, Gravenberch played defensive midfield; he also has defensive midfield experience with the Netherlands and the club’s youth.
In his two full seasons at Ajax, he had an aerial duels percentage of 66.7% and 64.8%, respectively, and at 6’2″ he could offer a sizable physical presence to the Reds’ midfield.
Despite the little amount of time they have to complete the deal, the Reds are claimed to have gotten the required “encouragement” to do so.
The summer transfer window will close on Friday at 11 p.m. (BST), so the club must act quickly to complete any outstanding transactions.
