Liverpool

The £100 million transfer decision by FSG has set Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool back five years.

Liverpool’s net spending this summer has been close to £100 million, although it is not by any means the most in the Premier League.

Al-Ittihad would prefer to think differently, but Liverpool’s summer transfer business is finally complete. Follow the latest transfer news and more with o Al-Ittihad.

It also gives us a chance to consider how much Fenway Sports Group was willing to support Jurgen Klopp’s midfield makeover.

Certainly, the expected free transfers of James Milner, Naby Keita, Roberto Firmino, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, as well as the loanee Arthur Melo’s return to parent club Juventus, increased the urgency of change that had already become apparent during a disappointing previous campaign. Additionally, it was made worse by Fabinho’s later departures.

At that point, Liverpool had already signed Dominik Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig and Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton. Wataru Endo later joined from Stuttgart after attempts to sign Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia failed. Prior to last Friday’s transfer deadline, Ryan Gravenberch, who had been sought after the entire transfer window, was ultimately acquired from Bayern Munich.

If add-ons are realized, Liverpool will have spent a total of £151 million on their four new midfielders. Never before has a single transfer window seen such a thorough restructuring of one particular area of the team, though the acquisition of strikers Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll in response to the sale of Fernando Torres on deadline day in January 2011 still stands as a benchmark, along with the simultaneous signings of goalkeepers Jerzy Dudek and Chris Kirkland in 2001.

The sales of Fabinho and Henderson generated $52 million, bringing the total net expenditure to slightly under £100 million. And during FSG’s tenure at the club, that sum has only been eclipsed once during a transfer window, in 2018, when their balance sheet showed a net expenditure of £136 million.

Liverpool spent more than £100 million on the last midfield makeover that summer, adding Fabinho and Naby Keita as well as an offensive option in Xherdan Shaqiri. At the time, Liverpool had money left over from the £142 million acquired from the sale of Phillipe Coutinho to Barcelona the previous January. Alisson Becker, a goalkeeper, was the high-profile acquisition during that transfer period and cost Roma £65 million.

Naturally, everyone is aware of what transpired next, with the newcomers, along with Virgil van Dijk’s arrival earlier in the year, aiding Liverpool in taking the final step toward becoming champions of Europe, the world, and eventually, after a 30-year wait, England.

The early indications from the first four games indicate Liverpool are in a position where they can improve on their great sprint to the finish line last season, and Klopp will undoubtedly hope this summer proves to be equally transformative.

The latest transfer window is a continuation of FSG’s recent pattern of spending an increasing sum of money on recruits. The net expenditure increased from £38 million in 2020–21 to £43 million the next year, £72 million last year, and £99 million thus far this year. The overall net expenditure over the past six years is just over £350 million. The fact that the summer expenditure coincides with Liverpool missing out on Champions League riches for the first time in seven years—while also welcoming in yet another sporting director in Jorg Schmadtke—indicates that it has been acknowledged that the Reds cannot afford to miss out on qualifying for the competition for a second consecutive year.

Therefore, disregarding any last-minute actions taken by the Saudi Pro League prior to their transfer.
