Due to his remarks after receiving a red card at Newcastle, Virgil van Dijk has received a second one-game suspension in addition to a fine.
In the thrilling 2-1 victory over Newcastle last month, Liverpool’s captain was sent off in the first half for a last-man challenge on Alexander Isak.
The decision of referee John Brooks to brandish a red card initially astounded Van Dijk, and his protestations to Brooks and fourth official Craig Pawson resulted in a charge from the FA.
The No. 4 called the verdict a “f***ing joke” before leaving the field, and after confessing to acting “improperly” toward a match official, he was given his sentence.
He already served the one-match suspension for the red card received against Aston Villa, but now he will be absent from the trip to Wolves on September 16 due to a second one-match suspension.
In addition, Van Dijk was fined £100,000 for using derogatory language toward authorities.
“The defender confirmed that he acted improperly and used abusive and offensive language against a match official after being dismissed in the 29th minute,” the FA said in a statement. “Thereafter, the punishments were applied by an independent regulatory panel.
“Full written justifications for this case will be made public as soon as possible.”
VAR official Stuart Attwell and his assistant may be heard performing numerous checks on the audio recording of exchanges between the VAR, referee, and players as Van Dijk is dismissed, which was recently made public.
Van Dijk was overheard calling it a “f**king joke” at the end of the chat, but Brooks insisted he made the right decision from the start.
It’s likely that Joe Gomez and Joel Matip will once more start together in center defense for Wolves as Ibrahima Konate continues to recover from his injury.
