Dominik Szoboszlai insists he shouldn’t be viewed as Hungary’s “superstar” despite the increase in popularity following his £60 million move to Liverpool.
Following his move to Anfield, Szoboszlai’s star is unquestionably rising, not least because of how quickly he has adjusted.
The 22-year-old scored his first goal for the Reds in the 3-0 victory over Aston Villa, and he was at least a contender for Man of the Match in each of the previous three matches.
Szoboszlai played the entire 90 minutes as captain in his debut international match as a Liverpool player on Thursday’s 2-1 triumph over Serbia.
After that game, when speaking with reporters, including Index’s Andras Gall,
The midfielder denied claims that he ought to be considered a “superstar.”
I am still Dominik Szoboszlai, even though I play for Liverpool, he insisted. “Everyone on this team is on equal footing. I want to lead by example and support the group. I don’t want people to think of me as a superstar.
I don’t want this to become a hot topic within the team, but of course the media writes what they want. The Hungarian’s humility makes him a perfect fit for Jurgen Klopp’s side, and his outlook is unlikely to change even as he appears to be on the verge of becoming one of the club’s most important players. Szoboszlai’s effort on and off the ball is highlighted by the fact that he has twice had to play as a number six after his team-mates received red cards.
Despite the goals and assists he inevitably provides, it is perhaps this quality that some at Anfield are starting to value most.
As in Hungary, Szoboszlai’s emphasis on groups over individuals only increases his popularity among police officers.
