The Patriots seem to be leaning toward selecting a quarterback in the NFL Draft of 2024, but there is much disagreement on which pick to make.
Eliot Wolf, the de facto general manager, and head coach Jerod Mayo were willing to trade the third overall pick. However, Mayo stated that NBC Sports and another club would need to provide a “bag.” Only three or more first-round selections would be enough to entice New England, according to Boston’s Tom Curran.
The Patriots’ intention to select one of the top signal-callers, such as Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, or J.J. McCarthy, is suggested by such signals. Nobody can predict what the Washington Commanders will do with the number-two choice, and Mayo was aware of their degree of control over the 2024 NFL Draft.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reiterated his prediction that Daniels will be selected by Washington at number two, sending Maye or McCarthy to New England.
Although Mayo was quite positive about the potential last month, it is said that the Patriots “don’t love” the North Carolina product. Furthermore, McCarthy is apparently a prospect Wolf is “pushing hard” for.
In his most recent mock draft, which was conducted this week, Mel Kiper Jr. had the Patriots choose Maye.
He was more explicit when he was asked on a conference call two weeks prior to the draft which player he preferred, Maye or McCarthy. According to the “Next Pats” podcast from NBC Sports Boston, Kiper said to Tom Curran, “You had to be able to take the concern that you have and be able to coach through it.” The most important thing with these quarterbacks is that you will have continuity with that staff if you believe you can teach through the issues and have the right personnel in place. The coordinator and coach are doomed if things stay the same and don’t alter during the first, second, third, or fourth years.
Once more, I believe the issue extends beyond the quarterback’s advantages and disadvantages. It is mostly related to the organization that acquires him. Thus, I believe you’ll have a reliable quarterback if you manage Maye and McCarthy well. Of the two, I believe Maye has the most potential to be great. McCarthy might not be a disaster after all. I believe you have a somewhat different perspective. I believe you should take Drake Maye if you want to hit a home run.
Kiper gave somewhat of a qualifying response, but it makes sense. Because of this, some people are worried that the Patriots will select a quarterback who will be accompanied by a subpar supporting cast.
However, it seems that Mayo and offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt will work together for a long time, which would mean that the coaching staff will be reliable. Should New England decide to take a risk with the third overall pick and choose wide receiver Keon Coleman in the second round, Maye would have encouragement from Kiper.
